How do the Mentorships Work?
Most of our students begin our program already engaged in ministry and select a mentor from their church or ministry. For example, we have one student from Colonial Presbyterian in Kansas City, Missouri. He arranged for one of the older staff member at the church to mentor him while he progresses through the program. We can also work with new and prospective students to connect them to one of our ministry partners and arrange a mentoring opportunity for them in that ministry. All students are require to be actively engaged in a ministry field under the supervision of a mentor as they progress through the program. It is recommended students meet with their mentor once per week for one hour for spiritual encouragement, study, and active coaching on their area of ministry.
How does the Curriculum Work?
The Heartland Theological Seminary is a two year curriculum with 10 modules, 9 in-class modules and 1 Masters project or thesis paper. Each in class module is 9 weeks in length. The 9, in-class modules progress in a fixed two-year cycle. It is recommended that students stick with the curriculum through the course of the whole program. If a student for any reason misses a module, they won’t have another opportunity to complete that module until it comes back around in the two year cycle.

What is the Significance of your Motto and Logo?
The Sword and Trowel are images drawn from the Old Testament book of Nehemiah. After Israel had returned from exile they were faced with the task of rebuilding the wall around Jerusalem. During the construction, they were constantly under attack from neighboring cities. Each man kept one hand ready with the sword to defend the city and the other hand working to build the wall. We believe this is a fitting metaphor for the vision of Heartland Theological Seminary. Our students will be trained in theology and the scriptures, the sword, and they will also be given the practical tools they need to succeed in ministry, the trowel. They then become the embodiment of our latin motto, autitoribus et factores, translated “hearers and doers” as they live out the call of James 1:22. “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”
